They usually increase their day rate to compensate for this expense or they will have to work through another service company.

There are obvious disadvantages to each of these options.

If he provides his own insurance, there will be a significant upfront investment he will have to make. A day rate increase of 20%-25% to compensate for elevated insurance premiums is more or less standard. It is certainly not uncommon. If he works through a larger service company, they tack on a 15-25% surcharge for providing you that service. Of course the consultant can always work through one of the larger Consultant firms, but they generally want at least 25% and often more. They will of course use the contact to attempt to employ their own consultants to where they can retain an even larger percentage of the day rate.
